Chess players have been showing up in increasing numbers at the poker tables of late, especially at some of the larger poker tournaments held at US Casinos such as the Rio, the Bellagio, and the Borgata. Like players of other games such as backgammon and Magic the Gathering, many chess players are drawn to poker as it not only rewards dedicated players who can incorporate strategic thinking into their play but also offers a shot at some huge paydays, with the winners of many major events taking home over $1 million.

For chess players, it’s often an easy transition to the world of poker, especially when you factor in what it takes to be a successful player in both pursuits. Almira Skripchenko and Dinara Khaziyeva both recently made the final table of a World Poker Tour event in Los Angeles, and former child chess prodigy Jeff Sarwer has earned more than $500,000 in various events around the world. Many chess players are also active at the online poker tables, which are a popular and convenient choice for those who prefer to play at online casinosites instead of traveling to tournaments.
